essica Simpson doesn’t mind donning short-short cutoffs to portray Daisy Duke on film and using sex to sell pizza on TV, but she apparently finds hobnobbing with the president at a GOP fund-raiser in bad taste.

Saying she doesn’t want to politicize her favorite charity, Simpson snubbed President George W. Bush by declining an invitation to a $2,500-a-plate fund-raiser for the National Republican Congressional Committee.

The singer was in Washington yesterday to lobby lawmakers on behalf of Operation Smile, which offers free plastic surgery to disadvantaged kids with facial deformities.

“I think the universal language is love and that’s always shown with a smile,” Simpson said. But she refused to appear at the GOP fund-raiser because Operation Smile is a non-partisan group, and she likes to keep for personal political views private.

But the event was just fine with Mary Carey, a porn star who ran for California governor. Attending for the second year, Carey hammed it up for the cameras and even attended a lunch featuring Karl Rove as featured speaker.
